A full day at Siam Amazing Park in eastern Bangkok: a water park and a rides park on one site. This is a one-day ticket, and what the ticket offers you access to depends on the type booked, so it is worth knowing which one you hold before you set out. Transport is not included.
The wave pool here has been recognised as the biggest anywhere — a sheet of water over a hectare in size, which is less like a pool than a small beach with a horizon.
It works on a cycle. Water is held in chambers behind the deep end and released in timed pulses, so waves arrive in sets with quiet gaps between them. That is worth knowing: if you position yourself during a lull you can choose your depth before the next set arrives, rather than being carried into it.
Siam Amazing Park opened in 1980 and has been a fixture of Thai family life ever since. It was never designed for foreign visitors, and that is the point of coming: the crowd is local, the food is what Bangkok families actually eat on a day out, and the atmosphere on a Sunday is nothing like a resort water park.
The practical consequence is that Thai school holidays and weekends fill it. A weekday in term time is a different park from a Saturday in April.
The park is in Khan Na Yao, out towards the eastern edge of the city, and from the usual hotel districts that is a long way through Bangkok traffic — comfortably an hour, and considerably more at the wrong time of day.
Nothing about this is a problem if you plan for it. Go early, before the roads set solid, and settle how you are getting back before you are standing at the gate at closing time with wet hair.
Bring swimwear, a towel and something for your feet. Lockers, towels and cabanas are hired at the park rather than included, and food and drinks are settled on site, so carry local notes.
Shade is limited on the water side in the middle of the day, and sunburn is the thing people underestimate here. Bangkok sits at thirteen degrees north, the water reflects a great deal of what comes down, and the burns happen while you are cool and enjoying yourself. Reapply more often than feels necessary, and use the shade the park provides.
